Must-have art supplies for the home studio: SCHOOL AGE

What basic supplies should guardians have at home for K-5 artists?

Your school age Scribblers will be drawn to create their original compositions using a variety of 2-D and 3-D media and techniques. From drawing and inking a map of their neighborhood with tons of detail to designing a dream house to sculpting a superhero bobblehead toy, school-age artists can engage in abstract and representational art-making that combines their foundational knowledge of materials with their highly imaginative brains!

In addition to working with more traditional materials, Scribblers can also see the potential for creation in everyday objects: Paper towel rolls become sculptures, magazines pages become collage self-portraits and upcycled t-shirts that turn into painted tote bags!

Some basic supplies for your school age artist can include:

  • Water cups and paint palette

  • Acrylic and liquid watercolor paints

  • Paintbrushes of various sizes

  • Sketchbook or drawing paper supply

  • Drawing (graphite) and colored pencils

  • Scissors and glue stick

  • Upcycled and found objects

There’s so much amazing exploration that can happen with just a few basic materials and a bit of creativity. Stay tuned for lots more project ideas, drawing prompts, and more!
