SUMMER 2017!

EARLY CHILDHOOD

MINISCRIBBLERS | DROP IN THIS SUMMER! 18MO-3Y0 WITH PARENT

This 45-minute class is a great opportunity for parents to guide their toddlers through the exploration of materials perfectly suited to their innate interests. They'll be drawing with spacial crayons that glide on the page, using stamps big enough for feet and hands, watercolors that vividly demonstrate color-mixing, glue that's easy to spread, fabric that's soft and bright in color, scissors that are easier to hold, and the list goes on and on. We make it a priority to seek out the best art materials for our youngest artists! Every material and project is carefully selected to complement the unique characteristics that define "toddlerhood." This summer we'll be offering drop in Miniscribbler classes on Wednesdays at 10am starting 7/12. This is a great opportunity to hand pick your class without the commitment of a full class session. Projects listed below. Drop ins are $30/class. SPOTS ARE NOT GUARANTEED WITHOUT PRIOR REGISTRATION.

PRE-SCRIBBLERS | SPRING 2017 3-4YO DROP OFF

This one-hour drop-off class is perfectly suited for the child who's not a toddler anymore but also is not quite ready for after-school. We'll explore all sorts of art materials much the same way we do in the Mini Scribbler's classes but this time without mommy, daddy, or babysitter. Collage, painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking with our artistic peers, oh my! We'll also begin to introduce themes such as animals, ourselves, objects, places, etc. As always, we'll also include an element of visual literacy (analyzing artwork or images). All classes end with a daily art show where scribblers present their pieces to the class to discuss what they've created and how! Class runs for 9 weeks for $270. Monthly payment plan of $135/month for 2 months.

WOODWORKING
What ever happened to wood shop being a subject at school?  Don’t worry!  We have it right here in our art studio.  In this class, students will learn the basics of working with wood including how to safely cut it down to size using simple tools, assembling pieces into a whole using both power tools and other adhesives, and creating an interesting finish using stains, sanding processes and paints.  Artists will explore both fine art wooden sculpture as well as small functional objects.
MONDAYS 3:30PM SIGN UP!

EDIBLE ART
So much for telling your kids not to play with their food!  This class is all about using our hands to make art with our food.  We’ll be making sculptures, paintings, collages and more, all with food as our material.  In addition to this, we’ll be learning about the chemistry of food: how does dough rise into a 3-dimensional sculpture?  How can we use the transition from liquid to solid in order to make some amazingly edible drawings?  How can we use melting to create paintings?  Rethink food and rethink the cooking process!
TUESDAYS 3:30 SIGN UP!

PAINTING
Painting is a complex and beautiful process that children love. Well explore gouache, watercolor, acrylic, ink and other forms of mark making with a brush and without. Alternating the painting surface, material and tools will give our artists a wealth of various experiences with the art of creating work (both abstract and representational) with paint.
WEDNESDAYS 4:30PM - FULL

WEARABLE ART
This is fashion design with a scribble twist. We'll be exploring a wide variety of wearable art including making wallets and accessories out of fabric & non-traditional materials, silk-screening bags and t-shirts, as well as sewing recycled fabrics to make new garments. Lastly, we'll play around with some dyes to make our own custom-colored fabric!
FRIDAYS 3:30PM SIGN UP!

TWEEN CLASSES
PRINTMAKING
This class will give our artists experiences with both traditional and non-traditional printmaking methods including block printing with found objects, linoleum printing, mono-printing and more.  We'll print on many different surfaces including fabric and 3-d objects.  This medium is an amazing way to explore layering, color theory and most importantly (and unique to printmaking) how to utilize having multiples of one piece of artwork! This class will be taught by our amazing teacher (and painter in her own right), Natasha Hesketh. The class is  75 minutes long on Thursdays at 5:45pm and runs from 1/12-5/18 (no class 2/23 & 4/13) 17 weeks for $480 or 5 payments of $96.

PAINTING: CREATURES
We'll spend the week inventing our own creatures and then creating large-scale portraits of those creations! Then, we'll transform those 2-d portraits into 3-dimensional sculptures.

SCULPTURE: INVENTIONS & MACHINES
We'll start the week by creating drawing machines using small motors and found objects. Then, we'll make mobiles using fimo, wood, and wire, using motors to make our intricate objects kinetic.

DRAWING: SELF & OTHERS
We'll begin by making large-scale self portrait paintings. Then, we'll delve into life drawing with our fellow campers as our models. We'll make a collaborative drawing of all of our campers using ink!

BAKING & EDIBLE ART
This week will be an exploration of food as an art medium. We'll make sculptures and drawings using food both baked and uncooked.

THEATRE
Campers will explore movement, voice and dramatic play through a variety of theatre activities and games. With a focus on ensemble building and fundamental theatre skills, this workshop is a fun filled week appropriate for kids with any level of theatre experience. The week will culminate in a final share for families in one of the neighborhood parks.

XYLOPHONE BAND
Strike your mallets on xylophone, metallophone, or glockenspiel and hear how your part weaves into a full ensemble. We will learn the lively marimba music of Zimbabwe, as well jazz, blues, and more! Groove to the rhythmic harmonies using these wonderfully versatile barred percussion instruments. Here's a video from the Scribble exhibition at the Academy. To hear those low bass bars, listen through stereo speakers or good headphones! PS 180 Xylophone Group: Clave
