ART OF PLAY
DECEMBER 12TH 3-6PM
AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ARTS AND LETTERS
Art is, at its essence, our willingness to play with materials; to allow ourselves to explore how we can transform a blank surface or fill an empty space without the pressure of what it will look like in the end. This connection between experimentation and artmaking is never as clear as when you’re a child. This exhibit follows the evolution of the relationship between play and artmaking as we age; from toddlers who explore their immediate space making art as a by-product, to pre-schoolers who create images through cause and effect, to school-age children who see play as organized collaboration or a game. We complete our exhibition with the work of our teaching artists who reflect upon the closely entangled concepts of experimentation and direct problem solving within the artistic process.
