Creative drawing prompts to engage your artist

The Continuation Drawing

Your artist will collage a small section of a photo or illustration from a magazine onto a sheet of paper, and then continue that image through drawing.

Questions to ask when selecting an image to collage:

  • Does this image remind you of anything?

  • Do you see any colors or shapes you like in this image?

  • How can you add onto this image through drawing?

After selecting an image and cutting a small section of it out, have your artist carefully glue it onto a blank sheet of paper. The collaged section should only take up a small portion of the paper, in order to leave plenty of room to continue the image through drawing. An easy way to get started is to simply find a line in the image and continue it with a drawing tool into the blank space on the page.

Questions you can ask to boost your artist's creativity during the drawing process:

  • What is the little piece of the picture missing?

  • What could we draw to add onto this picture?

  • How can we create an interesting setting or background for this picture?

  • What other body parts could you add to this character or creature? (If collage piece includes part of an animal or figure)
